The following small business surveys have been conducted by CPA Australia.

CPA Australia's Small business survey 2008 focuses on the various aspects of financial management of small businesses.

Small business survey 2007

This survey is the tenth in our Small Business Survey Program. Through the Small Business Survey Program, we aim to provide research to inform the decisions of small business owners, advisers to small business and policy makers.

Information technology - its impact on small business

November 2006: This survey provides information technology (IT) insights to inform the decisions of small business owners, advisers to small business and policy makers.

Finance managers in family-owned small to medium enterprises

July 2006: A report on the benefits and difficulties for accountants working in family-owned small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

The SME 'finance gap'

May 2006: A research report on SME attitudes and experiences with bank loan applications.

When the franchisor fails

February 2006: An exploratory study that aims to determine the effect of franchisor failure on franchisees.

Getting and keeping good staff: HR issues and challenges in small firms

February 2006: Research conducted to assist in understanding the human resource management practices used by small firms and investigate the effect of the Federal Government's reforms to industrial relations on their practices.

Providing business advice for SMEs

September 2005: Research investigating the nature and magnitude of business advisory services offered by public accountants to SME clients and examines SME client experiences of these services.

Record-keeping: its effect on tax compliance

July 2005: Research exploring the relationship between the record-keeping practices of small businesses' and their potential exposure to tax and related business compliance problems.

Outsourcing

May 2005: Research into the main concerns small business have with oursourcing, the important factors when selecting outsourcing service providers and the reasons why outsourcing can be beneficial.

Banking

October 2004: Research into the the satisfactions, motivations and difficulties experienced by small business when dealing with banks.

Attracting skilled staff

October 2004: This survey looks at the views of small business owners in Australia on attracting skilled staff and on OH&S issues.

Succession and exits

April 2004: This survey looks at small business owners' preparedness for exit and succession planning.

Financial management, insolvency and fraud

September 2003: This survey looks at financial management, insolvency and fraud in the Australian small business sector.

Compliance burden

April 2003: This survey focuses on issues surrounding small businesses' compliance, particularly in relation to taxation and superannuation.

Use of computerised record keeping

September 2002: This survey investigates why small business did not move to computerised record keeping after the introduction of the new tax system.

Perceptions of risk

August 2002: This survey shows that less than half of small businesses have strategies to deal with common business risks. An even smaller proportion of CPAs credit their small business clients with appropriate risk management strategies.

Employment issues

March 2002: This survey focuses to a large extent on small businesses' attitudes and perceptions about employment and the motivating factors behind small businesses' employment decisions.
